We are convinced that sound environmental and energy management has a positive effect on the performance of the company. The following projects highlight our commitment to these principles.
We have upgraded our internal sand reclamation to enable us to process all our moulding sand. The hopper pictured above was installed in 1999 so that the excess sand could be sent for reuse, rather than to landfill. This project has reduced our dependence on landfill by about 90% and significantly reduced our sand disposal costs.
We were members of Target 2010, the foundry industry sector negotiating body for climate change levy rebate. As members of this body we were contractually committed to reducing our energy consumption by 11% over a ten year period. To meet this commitment we installed new gas fired ladle heating and new boilers for water heating for the shower block which has resulted in a 20% reduction in total energy usage. We are pleased to announce that we have met all our targets for energy reduction to date. As off 2014, we are no longer in a Climate Change Agreement, metallurgical industries having been taken out of Climate Change Levy. The driving factor behind improvements to our energy and environmental performance will now be commercial rather than legislative and to this end we are exploring the possibility of using solar panels on the foundry roof and looking at ways to capture the waste heat energy from the furnace cooling radiators.
The control panel also has the latest flame failure equipment to give safe operation of the system. We are pleased to announce that we have met all our targets for energy reduction to date.
